Making Marks Exercise 2

I took what considered to be the most successful of my marks from the previous exercise and worked on how to manipulate areas of shading using them. This has been my favourite page so far in terms of creating it and the finished result. The top left square was created by layering finger-blended areas of successively softer pencils and graphite. The other marks were all developed and varied by using various pencils, varying the grip and firmness of marks and the density of marks. I had been pleased with my HB ‘happy’ marks but was unnsure how this could be layered and used in shading. I was pleasantly surprised with the result (bottom row, second from right).
